What Every Real Estate Professional Needs in Their Toolkit
When you need up-to-date information about real estate assessments you should go directly to the source, the database of your local city or county assessor. While multiple listing services and other real estate information service companies provide access to assessment information in a central database, the information is often dated (quarterly updated for example) and may not reflect changes made by the assessing office as part of the assessment review and appeal process. For example, during August and September many Boards of Equalization are meeting throughout Northern Virginia to consider revisions to assessments as part of the assessment appeal process. The best way to be certain of the most up-to-date assessed value is to access the real estate assessment database for the assessment office where the subject property is located.
Here is an easy to use list of real estate assessment databases for the Greater Northern Virginia Region that includes:
- Alexandria City
- Arlington County
- Culpeper County
- Fairfax City
- Fairfax County
- Falls Church City
- Fauquier County
- Loudoun County
- Madison County
- Manassas City
- Manassas Park City
- Orange County
- Prince William County
- Rappahannock County
All of the 14 local assessment jurisdictions listed have online databases for real estate assessment information that can be accessed 24/7. The list also includes contact information for each assessment office and a link to the assessment office's main webpage where general information about assessments can be found, as well as important deadlines for submitting assessment information and filing for assessment reviews and appeals.
Remember, the best information about real estate assessments should be obtained from your local assessor, not from sources that are only periodically updated, often for a fee.
Author's Note: The original posting of this list (August 6-8) included that Fauquier County did not have an online database for real estate assessment information that could be accessed 24/7. Thanks to Lori Hertig for her comment and web link the list has now been updated to include the Fauquier County site. My apologies to Fauquier County, especially to the Commissioner of Revenue, for this oversight.
WHERE IS THE RAPPAHANNOCK CO LINK?
